Hope over Harm | Is Life Always Worth Living

The End of Life Choice Referendum showed that the majority of New Zealanders think that there are circumstances under which it is reasonable for someone to ask someone else to end their life. And each year, there has been an increase in the number of assisted deaths. Some of the reasons listed in government reports are due to cancer, chronic illness, or disability. Does life lose its sense in the face of suffering? Or, is life always worth living? Come get inspired to encounter, understand, and overcome the euthanasia temptation. Filled with stories, this talk will equip you to better engage in these conversations and experiences in your own life because this concerns all of us.

About the Speaker: Amanda Achtman is a Canadian writer, speaker, and advocate, and a leading critic of her country’s medical assistance in dying program. She served as the senior advisor to a member of parliament working to prevent the expansion of euthanasia to persons living with a disability or mental illness. Through producing short films, recruiting witnesses to testify before committees, and organizing press conferences, she worked to give a platform to those most impacted by this legislation. She is the founder of Dying to Meet You, a project of cultural renewal to humanize our conversations on suffering, death, meaning, and hope.
